Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor

Chapter 1

It was a night just like any other and a mission just like all the rest. Ghouls had been reported near a genetics laboratory out in the countryside and Alucard, the No Life King was sent to destroy them. He was also to save any of the people working at the lab but to him that didn’t really matter, or so he thought.

Alucard surveyed the scene before him. It looked as if he had been here and battled all the ghouls himself as body parts lay strewn everywhere. Sadly he mused that the carnage was not his doing. Someone else had all the obvious fun. Alucard’s eyes widened at the sudden thought of his beloved enemy, the Judas Priest lurking nearby awaiting another battle with the No Life King. A devious grin crept upon his chiseled features. Where could that Catholic be? Alucard started drifting further into the building looking for the Paladin and anticipating another glorious battle with the regenerator.

The Kahn Genetics Laboratory lobby, although blood soaked and covered in ghoul parts, proved to be deserted. The next level up consisted of empty offices and also appeared deserted. The ghouls must have been the people working here, but Alucard noted that he didn’t recall seeing any lab coats or suits in the debris. He mulled this over as he headed down a hallway that he thought would lead to the lounge or conference area. As he approached the double doors he could hear whispering from the other side. He stopped and listened before approaching again. From the snippets he heard he learned that a Dr Harker had herded everyone from the offices into the meeting room and instructed them to barricade the doors before going to deal with the intruders. Apparently this Dr Harker was the one who stole all of Alucard’s fun and could be found back down on the lobby level.

Alucard headed towards the nearest stairwell picking up the faint thumping of a heartbeat. As he headed down the stairs nothing in his life or unlife could have prepared him for the sight that was before him. There, fallen on the steps face up lay the face that has haunted him since his living days. There in blood stained clothes with sword in hand, wavy auburn gypsy hair strewn in a halo about her face, lay Elizabeta. Alucard felt he would lose what semblance of sanity he had left if she opened her eyes and they were sapphire blue. Thankfully the woman remained unconscious. Alucard found himself staring and repeating like a mantra, “she’s not Elizabeta she just looks like her” over and over and over again.

After what could very well have been an eternity, against better judgment, Alucard slowly knelt down, gently lifted the unconscious woman into his arms and disappeared from the site. He had felt the pull of his Master impatiently awaiting a resolution to the ghoul attack and a full report from Alucard on the completion of this search and destroy mission. He had precious little time to make the woman comfortable in his coffin before he went to make his report. He was certain his Master would not be the least bit pleased with what he had to report and even less pleased that he had brought the woman back with him. His mind drifted to the mysterious Dr Harker the survivors had whispered about. Could Dr Harker be the woman who looked like his Elizabeta? Alucard grimaced. How ironic it would be if she were a Harker. Mina Harker had resembled Elizabeta but had betrayed him and helped Abraham van Helsing defeat him. Mina had never looked exactly like his Elizabeta as her hair and eyes were dark brown and her nose and chin more angular. He had thought to amuse himself and fill his empty unlife with a mere resemblance but that was just not to be.

Who was he kidding, except himself? No one could or would ever feel anything remotely like love for a monster like him. It was absurd and utterly preposterous. What was he thinking bringing this woman to Hellsing? He could just imagine his Master Integra ranting: “your problem is that you weren’t thinking Alucard”; “she’s a security risk Alucard”; “NO you can’t keep her Alucard”; and “take her back before she wakes up Alucard”. “NO” he growled aloud at that last thought. He would not take her back. He could not take her back. He wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on her if he did. Now that he knew she existed he would not lose her again. For now he would leave her out of his report to Integra, after all, no one saw him take her. The survivors had no idea of the woman’s fate so he had some time to figure out what to do.

Feeling a bit more confidant and slightly smug, Alucard passed through the closed door to Integra’s office and stood before the Knight’s desk. As usual, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingate Hellsing was buried in paperwork. Bureaucracy as it usually goes. Alucard’s Master was finishing up one of the many reports she had to file with the Round Table Conference which gave the Nosferatu more time to think through the details of his “report”. By the time Integra signed the paperwork and pushed it off to the side Alucard had all the details worked out.

Taking one of her prized cigars out and lighting it, inhaling deeply, Integra breathed out in a cloud of smoke, “Report servant.”

“As you wish, Master” Alucard then started his report. “When I arrived at the laboratory all the ghouls reported were destroyed on the ground floor with most being in the lobby area. There were blood and body parts everywhere. It was glorious and a job worthy of myself. Finding no targets there I proceeded to the second level. It was mostly offices which were all empty. Following the hallway I came across a conference room where the survivors were barricaded in. I left them be and checked the other levels finding nothing else of interest. I then felt your impatience for my report and the clean-up crew approaching the scene so I returned here.”

Sir Hellsing contemplatively eyed her servant. Alucard wore the stony mask of nonchalance outwardly but was squirming inwardly. Could his Master have guessed he was not giving her all the details? Finally Integra asked the question he silently prayed she would ask, “Alucard, could the ghouls have been destroyed by the Iscariot Paladin?”

“There’s no way to know for sure Master” he replied truthfully. “The body parts did appear to be cut with a sharp edged weapon such as a sword or one of Anderson’s bayonets. However, I did not find any bayonets laying about so I cannot be sure.”

Alucard could tell his Master was deep in thought once again. He waited a few minutes before she finally dismissed him. He wasn’t sure but he suspected she would be calling that weasel Maxwell to accuse Iscariot of abusing the precarious treaty yet again. It never really mattered to him; he had other things to attend to now. His thoughts again drifted to the mysterious woman he had placed in his coffin earlier. Just who was she and was she responsible for the slaughtered ghouls? If there was one thing the No Life King had come to enjoy over the centuries it was puzzles and this woman presented him with one he just knew he was sure to enjoy.
