Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor

Chapter 4

As everyone, including Alucard stared at Mina; she could not help but feel exposed as if under a microscope. Her godfather Walter C Dollnezz just stood there also staring at her. Mina’s smile fell and she once again looked toward the ancient vampire sitting by her coffin-side. Mina had come to realize it was a coffin she had been laying in and surmised it was in fact Dracula’s coffin. Being the granddaughter of the real Mina Harker immortalized by Stoker’s novel, Mina knew most of the true story. Dracula the vampire was also real and had been defeated with the help of her grandmother. He was enslaved, experimented on and eventually used as a weapon against other vampires and supernatural creatures by Abraham van Helsing and his successors.

As her sapphire met his ruby orbs Mina saw the bloody tears streak the vampire’s face. She could not help but reach out and cup his cheek tenderly as if comforting a child who had fallen and wounded their knee. Something within her ached and cried out for him, although just what she had no clue.

Alucard was shocked by the boldness of her action. Was she not terrified of him? Surely she had to be afraid of him, just as everyone else always was. Even Integra and his fledgling Seras were afraid of him. The only humans who had not been afraid of him were Joseph Harker and most of the time Walter. Alucard could not even remember the last time anyone had ever touched him except to experiment on or punish him and yet this woman was tenderly caressing his tear stained cheek seemingly totally unafraid. She truly is a perplexing puzzle.

Integra was the first to snap out of the apparent shock they were all in. Moving forward into the cell, Integra spoke in her usual icy clipped tone, “Dr Harker, Welcome to Hellsing. I am Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, commander of the Hellsing Organization. It is my duty to see to your safety as her Majesty commands. My retainer Walter will see to a room for you after you have been cleared by Dr Trevelyan. If you need anything Walter will see to it for you.” Turning slightly, Integra continued in a darker tone, “Alucard, report to my office at once! That is a direct order from your master, servant.”

As Mina’s hand dropped away from his face, Alucard rose from the chair he had still been sitting in and quietly replied, “Yes, Master.” Surprising everyone present, except Mina who did not know any differently, Alucard silently followed his master out of the cell through the door. Seras just stood there blinking in disbelief while Walter shook his head slightly and approached his friend’s coffin. “Mina, my dear child, let’s get you to the infirmary to have Dr Trevelyan give you a quick look over so you can get cleaned up and off to bed for some rest.” Walter helped a somewhat shaky Mina from the coffin and led her through the labyrinth known as Hellsing Manor.

Mina could not help but giggle as she remembered her father once telling her, “It’s not the vampires at Hellsing Manor you have to worry about but the very place itself sucking the life out of you.” If Integra was any indicator, her father’s words rang with much truth behind them. The woman was far too stern and cold to be Mina’s age she mused. Perhaps the manor stole her life or perhaps it was a combination of living there as well as the responsibility of heading the vampire hunting organization that took the life from Integra. Mina did not honestly believe she would be there long enough to ever find out for sure.

In the office with Sir Hellsing and her pet monster...Integra sat behind her large wooden desk, hands folded together, cigar perched between her teeth silently glaring at her servant. Alucard, she noted, did not appear his usual arrogant, cocky smug self. No, not at all, in fact he appeared older, battered and broken looking. He’d not bothered to clean the blood from his face or clothing. Integra knew it was a sign of weakness the vampire despised and yet he had cried and apparently did not care who had seen him do so. This disturbed the young Knight more than anything else she had seen in her 25 years and Integra had seen quite a lot.

As Integra contemplated her vampire’s appearance and behavior, the No Life King broke her thoughts and the silence. “Lock me away if need be, but do not let her leave here where she can best be protected.”

To say Sir Integra Hellsing, the Iron Maiden, was stunned further by her vampire servant was a gross understatement. The Knight could not believe her ears and proceeded to pinch herself to be sure she was not having some bizarre nightmare. First Alucard cried in front of 4 people and now he was practically asking to be locked away? Surely these must be signs of the apocalypse! Why would he volunteer to be locked away when it had nearly destroyed his mind when the former Sir Hellsing had done so? ‘Do not let her leave here where she can best be protected...do not let here leave here...’ Integra was starting to get the idea. Her pet wished to keep the woman, but then why be locked away? If locked away he would not have any contact with her. Integra mulled it over several more times and could not fathom any reason for any of it. Finally, knowing Alucard’s twisted logic was most likely at work here, the Master demanded the truth from her Servant.

“Alucard, I am ordering you to speak truthfully and fully. There were be no omitting any detail, no twisting of any fact, no lie and no riddle. You will tell me the truthful reason behind you bringing Dr Harker here and the statement you made moments ago. Do you understand me servant? I order the complete plain truth from you.”

Alucard kept his head down and Integra could just barely hear “Yes, Master”. Integra chewed on the end of her cigar and waited to hear his response to her ordered questions while Alucard just stood there in silence. “Well Servant? Answer me!” Integra barked.

With a heavy sigh, Alucard answered, “Very well, Master. I overheard the survivors in the conference room talking about a Dr Harker seeing to their safety and realized he must have been the one to destroy the ghouls. I heard a heartbeat coming from the stairwell nearby and went to have a look at the man I thought had created the carnage in the lobby area. I never expected to find a woman who looks exactly like my beloved Elizabeta. I was not thinking when you became impatient for my return and I picked up the woman and brought her here. I knew you would be greatly displeased but I did not give it a second thought. I have no clue what I was going to do except make sure that she is safe.” Here Alucard paused and lifted his head to look directly and solemnly into his Master’s icy blue eyes, “On my word, Master,” the ancient vampire began, “I would never cause that woman harm nor would I willingly allow any to befall her.”

Integra could not only see the sincere truth of that statement in his burning crimson eyes, but she could swear she could actually FEEL it through the seals. No pun intended, but he was dead serious in this. Integra felt she needed to know more about her vampire’s history before she came to any decisions regarding Dr Harker’s stay at Hellsing Manor or Alucard’s possible incarceration. Integra needed Walter, another cigar and a stiff drink.
