Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor

Chapter 5

Walter and his goddaughter left a stunned Seras standing in her Master’s chamber totally shell-shocked. The poor fledgling’s mind was swimming and she felt she would drown for it. Seras could believe her Master bringing a woman back to Hellsing, but never would have thought she would exist long enough to see the day he would let anyone near his coffin let alone inside of it. Yet he had placed Dr Harker inside his coffin and she was still human.

Seras was further perplexed by Alucard’s tears. Her master always frowned upon shows of “human emotions” and yet he cried. What could possibly have transpired before she, Walter and Sir Integra had arrived to cause such a show of emotion by the ancient vampire? The woman gave no indication before they were there that she was awake or even spoke to her Master, so what could possibly have triggered such an emotional response.

Slowly the wheels were turning and things were falling into place for Seras. No one had ever come right out and told the young former policewoman anything other than her Master was an old vampire. Seras however, having been a policewoman noticed things and now they were falling into place and making sense. She silently ran through the mental list she was making in her head:

1. Vampire hunting organization called Hellsing
2. Ancient vampire servant named Alucard
3. Bram Stoker’s Dracula a “must read text book”
4. Abraham Hellsing founder of Hellsing Organization and the one to enslave Alucard
5. Abraham van Helsing defeated Dracula
6. Alucard is Dracula backwards
7. Mina Harker pursued by Dracula
8. Mina Harker brought to Hellsing by Alucard
9. Dracula is real
10. Alucard is Dracula.

Seras just somehow always knew there was a lot more going on than met the eye and now she knew what that was. Integra was a descendant of Abraham van Helsing’s and inherited control over Alucard/Dracula.

Seras began to wonder just how sadistic Abraham might have been as she pondered further on the experiments mentioned but never explained. She thought it rather cruel to bring Alucard back to England so close to the woman he sought. Perhaps he even saw her on occasion but Seras sincerely hope not. She knew how she would feel if in his shoes like that. Also changing the surname simply by dropping the ‘van’ and adding an ‘l’ was a cruel constant reminder of who had defeated the No Life King. Seras further saw the irony in renaming Dracula Alucard – the reversal of name just like the reversal of roles. Not only was the Vampire King no longer free to rule the night but now he must destroy other vampires like himself.
Seras shivered at the thought and then thanked God if he would hear her for letting her hunt only “freak” vampires. Seras could not imagine having to hunt someone like herself, someone who did no harm to the general civilian populous. She also knew that Sir Integra would not hesitate to “terminate” her if she felt the need. Seras shivered again at that thought. As useful and human as Seras was, she was no fool. She knew Integra only saw another vampire and never anything else.

As Seras finally headed towards her dungeon chamber, her thoughts then wandered to her Master’s current situation. He was likely enduring Sir Integra’s wrath. Seras doubted Integra could physically hurt the elder vampire after seeing him recover from being blown to bits, but Seras worried for what little sanity her Master had left. She knew there was some sanity there but she feared there was precious little of it in reality. There were other ways of hurting and abusing someone beside physically and to Seras those “ways” were far worse and harder to recover from.

Sir Hellsing sat in her office after ordering her vampire servant Alucard to his chamber in the dungeon with a cigar in one hand and a double scotch on the rocks in the other hand. ‘God,’ she thought, ‘I needed this. As if the “freaks” aren’t more than enough trouble to handle, Alucard goes and nabs Dr Harker behind my back.’ Integra takes a good “belt” of scotch before she reaches for the intercom. She hits the button for the ‘Infirmary’ and asks for Walter to come to her office as soon as he is able.

Walter turned to Dr Trevelyan to inquire about his goddaughter, “Colin is Mina unharmed? No signs of teeth marks of any kind are there?”

The good doctor turns and eyes the older butler oddly. “Do you suspect Alucard bit her before or after he brought her here Walter? I’ve found nothing in my examination to indicate that he did and Dr Harker does not believe she sustained any bites from either vampire or ghoul.”

“Thank goodness! I would hate to think that Mina would be subjected to such horrors” Walter stated a bit more forcefully than he intended. He was greatly concerned for his friend’s daughter. The No Life King himself took an interest in her even when her resemblance to her grandmother was moderate. Walter often thought Mina looked more like he imagined her mother had than any of the Harker clan. She had an Eastern European look to her yet she was well educated, intelligent and refined not like you would find in a typical gypsy.

Dr Trevelyan broke Walter’s reverie “Dr Harker has a clean bill of health and can go get some much needed rest in a more comfortable room than we can give her here in the medical wing.” Walter nodded, “Yes, I agree and a room has already been prepared for her.” ‘Her father’s old suite of rooms to be precise’ Walter thought to himself.

Mina walked silently with Walter to her room. She couldn’t help but wonder what had happened that her godfather seemed to ignore her. Had she done something wrong? Angered him in some way? Or perhaps it was because her presence angered his employer for some reason that he walked silently not making eye contact with her. Mina was perplexed.

It certainly was a strange turn of events. She had stumbled upon some of the secrets surrounding the “freak” vampires and the “freak” chip when she had looked at a file one of her colleagues had on the subjects. Her keen and ‘fresh’ eyes had spotted a list of “freak” differences. Her sixth sense told her it was genetic and she had asked to investigate that avenue. No one really took her seriously at first but as she made progress and proved some of her theories, those responsible for the “freaks” took notice of her and the attacks started.

The attacks only fueled Mina on to unravel the “freak” chip technology. Unlike true vampires these “freaks” were man-made and she was going to see them undone. As Mina settled into the soft bed provided she couldn’t help but think before sleep overtook her, ‘this is certainly a strange turn of events and I can hardly wait to get away, far away, from Hellsing Manor.’
