Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor
Chapter 6
Looking at the large wooden desk that dominated the few pieces of furniture in the even larger room it became apparent that it was going to be a very long day for Sir Integra Hellsing. Integra and Walter had gathered every journal, book and file they could find with references to Alucard or Dracula with the majority of them from his first years of captivity under Abraham. Walter knew some of the former Princes history but that did not really amount to much. His friend Joe had known so much more.
They both quickly learned that most of what was written about the mortal Dracula was done after his death and most likely greatly exaggerated. Walter had learned from Joseph that the Romanian people still held Prince Vlad in the highest regard and even believed he would one day return to save them from some dreaded evil. Most stories told of the Vampire Dracula in Romania were that he never took more than he needed and usually only the sick or elderly who were on deaths doorway in the first place. No mention was made of the three sisters who were said by van Helsing to be Draculas brides.
The historical books referencing Dracula mentioned his unknown first wife committing suicide and his second wife being the Catholic Countess Ilona of Hungary. He fathered a total of 6 sons several of which went on to rule as Princes and none which lived quite as long as their mortal father. Dracula had been born in December 1431 and was killed in battle at age 45 in December 1476.
He earned the title Impaler choosing impalement as punishment for criminal deeds. He also impaled Turkish troops he defeated as a warning to others. Walter remembered Joe commenting that the Romanian people found the stories of the Forest of Impaled grossly exaggerated often stating that if the numbers claimed were true there would be no trees left in most of Romania to this day!
Other than the story of the boy Vlad and his younger brother Radu being turned over to the Sultan as political prisoners, a few descriptions of the famous night raid against the Turks and a few other battles that kept Europe from becoming Muslim, there was little to no more information on Draculas life. There was nothing more on his first wife and no name for her. Integra felt they were missing something important and she did not want to ask Alucard what it was.
In the Journals and files from Abraham and Arthur there were vague references to Alucard dreaming or crying out during sleep or experiments. One journal entry Integras father made caught Walters eye. Sir, I may have found something. In one of your fathers journal entries he mentions Alucard calling out the name Elizabeta over and over again. He goes on to say that when asked about Elizabeta, Alucards eyes would glaze over and he would say nothing.
Hmm...One may assume then that Elizabeta may have been his first wife who committed suicide. Integra continued, Abraham makes mention in one of his journal entries that he believed, based on Jonathan Harkers journal description of Draculas reaction to Minas photo, Dracula went after Mina Harker because she may have resembled Draculas dead wife. Several times Abraham mentions Mina being the light of all lights.
Alucard certainly has a predisposition for pure women Walter mused aloud, Our Miss Victoria is proof of that. Sir Hellsing bit down on her cigar and could not help but ask, Does Dr Harker fit into Alucards bias Walter?
Walter nearly dropped the journal he was reading. How could Integra insinuate such a thing? Mina was practically royalty with the highest moral and ethical considerations. Of course she fit Alucards mould for the perfect woman. Unfortunately she fits the mould too perfectly Walter thought. Yes Sir she does indeed is what Walter replied.
Are you certain Walter? Seras Victoria being a virgin was quite the rarity but then she was never really exposed to university life as Dr Harker has been. What are the odds of finding a 25 year old virgin who has attended university? Integra pressed.
With all due respect Sir Integra, Mina has attained somewhere near 35 or more PhDs at the young age of 24. When would she have had the time to be wild and irresponsible while excelling at her academic studies? Walter retorted. He refused to believe Mina was anything but pure and chaste. Anything less than angelic would be totally unlike her. Walter had also reached the point of being offended by Integras chain of thought. How could she doubt him and insinuate such things? Of course, Walter realized, Sir Integra is jealous of Alucards interest in Mina. She fears Mina would steal the vampires attention from her. Since Alucard was released from his cell Integra has been the focal point of all his attention until now. Walter remembered how Integra was jealous of Seras when Alucard first turned her. Walter and Integra both came to believe however that was Alucards intention all along with Seras. The vampire was always trying to get a reaction out of his Master possibly to gain some of her attention for himself. Hopefully, Walter silently prayed, Integra will get over this jealous fit as quickly as she did with Seras.
Turning his attention back to the task at hand Walter decided to offer Sir Integra not only a way to learn more about her vampire servant, but God willing, also come to terms with his goddaughter. Sir Integra, might I suggest that you speak with Mina regarding her fathers inquiry into Alucards history? Joe had lived here with Abraham and your father until Alucard was locked away. He knew Alucard for over 50 years and traveled to Romania to learn more of him. Perhaps Dr Harker has some of his records, journals or knows more than what we have available to us here at the moment.
Her father lived here for that long? Integra had never heard of anyone named Joe living at Hellsing Manor. While Integra knew that Dr Harker was Mina Harkers granddaughter, the first female born into the Harker line since, she never gave a second thought to the remainder of her family line. This Mina was half Romanian born in Romania and her father was the son of Mina Harker, but Integra never bothered to find out which Harker son was her father. She did not recall ever hearing of a son named Joe or Joseph. There were only 2 mentioned at the end of the Stoker novel and they were Jonathan II and Quincy. In some versions of the novel only Quincy is mentioned, but Integras first edition mentions both sons.
Yes, Joseph Abraham Harker was living here long before I arrived Walter replied. As Joe had explained, he was Minas first born son and named after her father Joseph Murray.
I see Integra stated but in fact she wondered why no mention was ever made of Joseph in the Stoker novel or any of the records her family kept. Just who was Joseph Abraham Harker and why did she suddenly have a deep feeling of dread? She was never one to enjoy surprises and this news of someone living at Hellsing Manor that was not a part of the household records bothered her greatly.
