Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor
Chapter 7
Mina awoke in the late afternoon absolutely famished. When was the last time she had eaten? As she took in her surroundings, they were certainly more lavish than she was accustomed to and seemed from another time. The huge four poster bed had a featherbed as well as feather quilts and pillows. The mahogany bed frame was ornately carved as was the matching side tables, dresser and chest. There was also a chase lounge, 2 tall wing backed chairs and a fireplace. The fireplace may provide the heat in the winter as Mina did not notice any vents anywhere.
It was in one of the chairs that Mina noticed fresh clothing. She had been given a plain white gown after she left the infirmary and changed into it after a much needed shower. Now she rose and changed into the clean undergarments, white button up shirt and grey dress pants. Not exactly her style of clothing but she would have to make due until she returned home.
Mina then opened the main door to the bedroom and was astonished to see another room which resembled a sitting room with another fireplace, several tables and chairs, a large roll top desk and several bookcases. Minas hunger was temporarily forgotten while she looked at the titles the bookcases held. Several reminded her of her father as they were among some of his favorite works. Mina spotted one particular title that struck her as being rather odd. She herself could never see the genius in the writings of Ernest Hemmingway and found For Whom the Bell Tolls particularly droll. Mina instinctively pulled the book from the shelf and upon opening it found a journal hidden in the hollowed out pages. At least Hemmingway was useful for something she mused.
Mina sat in one of the chairs near the fireplace and opened the apparently forgotten journal. Luckily for her, she could not only speak but also read and write Romanian as the pages were written in that language in a bold calligraphy she was not familiar with. As she began to read she realized that the writer appeared to be Dracula and referred to her father.
Joseph decided to give me a gift of a journal so that I may impart some of my wisdom and knowledge into it for him and future generations.... The boy defies his father in nearly every aspect. Joseph refuses to become the successor of his fathers organization and further antagonizes Abraham by treating me humanely and insisting he also do so. The poor boy has endured several beatings because as he tells me, he is fond of me and wont put up with others abusing me so. The boy is too good natured for his own good. Abraham routinely reminds Joseph that I am a monster, but the boy continues to insist otherwise. I imagine his view will change in time with his fathers relentless perseverance.
Joseph asked me to set the story of my creation as a vampire down to paper for him. Abraham is of the opinion that I consorted with the Devil and sold my soul to the Beast for immortality. I find his view quite amusing but nowhere near the truth. Neither was I given the kiss of death from another vampire. The truth is far stranger and more mysterious, perhaps too much so to put to paper... Joseph read this latest entry and asked why I did not write the answer. I asked the boy what he thought the answer was and being an extremely bright lad he replied he believed I had been cursed by a mage and once death came for me I instead awoke to this unlife. I was rather surprised how close to the truth the boy had come! It was no mage who cursed me however but the very priest who had baptized me on the day of my birth. The hypocritical old bastard had dabbled in the Black Arts and cursed me for my alliance with the Catholics. When the rest of his order discovered his deed they burned him at the stake for heresy.
Mina read on for several hours more. There was some humor in some of the writings and profound sadness in others. One of the most striking entries concerned her grandmothers death. She, apparently like her father, had assumed that Dracula was hurt, furious and bitter by Minas betrayal but he wrote, Joseph was quiet and withdrawn today when I finally saw him. He told me of his mothers passing and that he was unaware that she had been so ill. Abraham has kept the boy in the dark regarding his mothers failing health. He is so much like her and continues as such in spite of Abrahams efforts to change him. Abraham strives to have the boy inherit the organization but Joseph resists him every step of the way... Despite what Abraham believes, it saddens me to know that bright light that was Mina has been extinguished. She who reminded me of my angel, my Elizabeta has been given the gift of eternal rest that I fear I shall never know. Joseph is not yet aware that Abraham has started experiments on me and other vampires to improve me as he put it. It has been noted that I am becoming resistant to silver, holy items and heal any wounds at an astonishingly quick rate. Perhaps Abraham will succeed in making me totally immune to death as he intends to use me as a weapon against threats to the crown but I digress. Mina was never meant for this cursed existence and as Abraham is quick to point out, she could never love a monster such as me. Mina was pure and angelic, like my Elizabeta who I cruelly lost too soon. My true hellish curse is to not know love or the warm and gentle touch of a woman who loves me ever again. One would think I would become accustomed to that loss after nearly 500 years. I am just a fool, a very old fool.
Mina was saddened and touched by this entry. Her grandmothers journal never mentioned Dracula with any hatred or malice but then she admitted that she could not love him either. Her father Joseph often told her when she was younger that he loved Vlad like a brother. Mina remembered fondly the stories he father used to tell her about the pranks he, Vlad and Walter would play on each other or Sir Hellsing and Sir Islands. One such prank they had taken pieces of wood painted to look just like cheese and crackers and served them to Sir Hellsing and Sir Islands. Arthur took longer than Sir Islands to realize something was wrong due to the heavy drinking he was taken to. Mina could just picture the scene and laughed aloud. It was at the thought of food that her hunger returned full force and Mina decided to head off to find the kitchen.
It was shortly after sunset that Seras headed up to the kitchen to find Walter for her evening blood ration. The petite blonde was about to open the door when she spotted the petite redhead Mina heading her way looking lost. Hellsing Manor easily would do that to someone who was unfamiliar with the maze of hallways.
Seras smiled and inquired in her chipper mood, Is there something I can help you find Miss? Mina laughed, which reminded Seras of tinkling bells. Im starving and could die looking for the kitchen if you hadnt offered to save me! Seras joined in laughing and giggled Right this way then.
The two women then headed into the kitchen giggling up a storm much to Walters pleasure. It was good to hear laughter once again and to see Miss Victoria in such high spirits. Walter always knew Mina would get along with Seras without any difficulty. They are a lot alike those two he mused. It was Sir Integra and Alucard he was most concerned about. He hoped Integra would warm up to the slightly older woman as it would be good for her to have a friend.
