Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor

Chapter 8

Alucard sat on his throne like chair looking miserable. Integra had ordered him to his cell until she personally called for him. Actually, Integra had ordered him to stay in the dungeon sublevels. He could go and visit his fledgling Seras if she were in her room but that was a bleak prospect as he really did not want to face her after she saw his tears.

He had been ridiculed and humiliated by Abraham and Arthur during his imprisonment to the family during the past 100 plus years. He believed he was a monster with no humanity and no emotion. How many times had they told him those were weaknesses in his kind? More than he could remember he mused.

Seras however refused to let go and she remained unchanged. Her demeanor, morals and ethics were unchanged and the soldiers didn’t fear her, they respected her. She had a few friends and the Captain who wished to be romantic with her even. She could lead a normal mortal existence for a time before having to move or change her name. She could also be turned to dust and find a final rest or eternal peace, whatever God was willing to grant her.

What did he have – absolutely nothing. He was nothing. He had no heart. Then what was this ache that thrummed in his chest and why the tears. Why think of Elizabeta and feel the loss again after all these centuries? The woman looked like her, so what. She was not her. Elizabeta was dead and rotting in hell. He would never see or speak to her again unless God chose to release him from this eternal existence. He had come to believe that only God could release him. No man had been able to including Abraham van Helsing.

Mina, Seras and Walter had been joined by Captain Bernadotte in the kitchen and were all enjoying sandwiches, tea and sweets. As long as Seras drank the donated blood she found she could tolerate small amounts of food without ill effect. Walter always mixed some blood in her tea too which helped. The four were having a good time talking and laughing.

Mina was able to turn the tables on the perverted Captain more than once which endeared her to Seras further. As they all sat there talking and eating Seras had come to realize she genuinely felt drawn to the young doctor and truly liked her. She felt like they were long lost sisters or something along those lines. They had a lot in common ranging from similar tastes in music, movies, literature and clothing. They both were orphans but Mina had lost her father later than Seras had. Mina also had a “family fortune” to take care of her where Seras had to rely on social service system but those were minor differences. Seras found herself once again praying to God that he would hear and grant her this wish – that Dr Harker would like her and be her friend in spite of her being a vampire.

Walter could not help but feel some regret for not welcoming Mina in a better fashion. He had let his worry and concern blind him but he resolved to not let that happen again. He found himself and Seras as well, smiling and laughing freely for the first time in a very long time. It felt good, so very good. His mind then wandered to his friends, Peter and Joe were gone now, but Alucard was still here. Then again Walter noted, ‘no, Alucard is not here to enjoy this moment and company. Perhaps he should be allowed to be here. He was, as Joe feared changed, during the time he was locked away, but every now and again I see the old Alucard there. Perhaps...’

Walter excused himself to take Sir Hellsing her evening tea. While in the office Walter decided to let Integra know that Mina was up and about. He then steeled himself and asked his employer “Sir, if I may be so bold as to ask if Alucard could come up to the kitchen for his blood as my arthritis is bothering me this evening.” Without looking up from her paperwork Integra off handedly replied “Certainly Walter and do remember to see Dr Trevelyan about that soon.” “Yes, Sir, very good Sir” was the stifled reply Walter gave. He did not want to give away his excitement to Sir Integra knowing her current jealous state.
Integra mentally ordered her servant to the kitchen to see Walter for his rations. Alucard was not hungry in the least having fallen into one very deep pit of a depression but not wishing to anger his Master he ghosted up to the kitchen to be greeted by a chorus of laughter.

Mina had just ‘zinged’ the perverted Frenchman and she and Seras were laughing hysterically to the point of tears. The two women were ahead of the Captain and he was beginning to sulk fueling their mirth further. Seras was the first to see Alucard standing there staring at them and greeted him. Mina then turned and saw the tall Nosferatu standing there and patted the seat next to her while enthusiastically saying “Vlad! Come join us and sit.”

“Why did you call Mr. Alucard, Vlad?” inquired Captain Bernadotte. “Well,” Mina began “I assume your parents did not christen you Captain even though most call you that. Am I correct?” The Captain looked at her rather puzzled and nodded his head ‘yes’. “His parents did not name or christen him Alucard. His name is Vlad. That’s actually the only name I ever heard him called by my father who happened to know him. Integra’s great-grandfather is the one who called him Alucard.” Mina explained.

“Vlad come sit” Mina stated again. Alucard found he could not refuse her and sat next to her at the kitchen table she and the others gathered around. Walter had walked in during Mina’s explanation to the Captain and had gotten another tea cup as well as a blood bag. He then handed Alucard a cup of blood-tea and sat back down in ‘his’ spot at the table to join back into the conversation.

Walter noted his friend sipped his tea while seemingly enraptured by Mina. The child certainly had always been a delight, blessed with a sharp mind and boundless sense of humor and Walter thanked God that some things just never changed. He noted after a while even Alucard was laughing and joining in the conversation. It was around 10 PM and the five of them were still going at it.

Walter was beside himself with joy. His old friend was as he remembered him when Joe was around, as close to ‘normal’ as Alucard could ever be and seemingly happy. He and Joe had often expressed their mutual feelings that they hoped one day Alucard would find true happiness. They both felt he deserved it.

Seras observed Alucard had completely lost himself in the conversation and revelry. She inwardly marveled at her Master laughing, talking, joking and smiling like a ‘normal’ person and not his typical ‘homicidal maniac’ ways. She honestly felt like this is what a family should be like in the evening and didn’t want this time together, just exactly like this, to ever end. This was by far the happiest Seras Victoria had ever been in her life and she wanted it to stay just like this. Sure she knew she still had to drink blood and destroy the “freaks” but that was her job after all. Having a job was part of a normal everyday life too.

Alucard could not remember the last time had enjoyed himself this freely, as it seemed it had been so very long ago. He felt as if a great weight had been lifted off of him. For the first time in centuries he very nearly felt free.
