Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor
Chapter 9
As the evening progressed in the kitchen area, Sir Integra sat in her office at her huge wooden desk pouring over the journal entries yet again for any clues that would assist her in her decisions. Sometimes... she mused to herself I wish I had a more normal existence with normal employees and normal duties. Her gloved fingers played with the cigar and lighter before she placed the cigar between her lips and light the end inhaling deeply. There is however nothing normal about vampire hunting so I should not indulge in such thoughts.
With that thought she turned back to one of her fathers journals before her and reread the entry again. The words were starting to jumble and she was beginning to spot only key phrases such as monster, creature and occasionally demon. They were the most frequent words over 4 letters in length in all the journals. Then she found an entry that was intriguing.
I have never really been certain of all the things my grandfather did to the vampire to enhance him as he used to put it. Only the monster himself or possibly Joseph has any idea but neither will talk of it. I had hoped when I was younger that grandfather would destroy the creature and from what little I have found in the remaining journals, at one time it appears that he have indeed tried to destroy Alucard. Yet the monster still exists. If I could only find the journals detailing the experiments I may be able to find a way to undo the demon. Now that the war is to a close I am considering locking the monster away. Walter shows much promise just as grandfather had believed he would. Walter can handle the few undead we encounter and I will be rid of the creature.
Finally Integra thought, the elusive Joseph is mentioned and he might have known what Abraham did to Alucard. The girl Mina would certainly know nothing on the matter, Im sure. Integra took another long drag on her cigar and exhaled slowly. As she watched the smoke swirl and curl about her thoughts suddenly hit upon something she nearly overlooked. Her father mentioned journals detailing the experiments done to Alucard and other vampires but he had never seen them. Where could Abraham have put them? She knew every inch of the estate including the secret rooms and areas hidden well below ground, so where could they be hiding?
Curious, the current Sir Hellsing left her office through a secret door and went down the darkened passageway. There was a hidden private study and 2 storage rooms off this passage before it opened in the first level hallway near the medical wing. She searched the study once again going so far as to upturn the desk and file drawers looking for hidden folders, journals or keys, anything that would give a clue to the journals location.
Once satisfied she literally left no stone unturned, she moved on to the storage rooms. Once again she came up empty handed so she exited the passageway startling one of the mercenaries under the command of Captain Pip Bernadotte. If the poor man had not seen Sir Hellsing closing the passageway door, he would have sworn she appeared from nowhere like the vampire Alucard always seemed to. Integra chucked as the startled man made a hasty retreat.
There were several more secret passageways in the upper levels leading downwards so Integra made her way to the closest one off the main hallway. As she approached she hit on a thought perhaps they are hidden in Abrahams tomb. She had been through all the secret rooms numerous times and never saw any journals she did not already know about and read. With this in mind, the current Sir Hellsing grabbed some keys from the box near the front entrance, exited the manor and heading across the grounds to the family cemetery. She made a note to pick up several items from the shed along the way.
It was a pleasant night with a large yellow full moon in the sky and gentle breeze. It was the first time Integra could remember going to the cemetery and it was not pouring rain. As she approached the fenced and gated private Hellsing Family section she took out the keys and unlocked the wrought iron gate. She then headed to the large tomb in the rear of the section. Taking the keys in hand again and opening the door.
As she entered Integra noted that there was only 1 vault in this tomb. Abraham left everything and everyone back in Holland. His wife had died in the asylum 2 years after his move to England and he just had her buried there. Her grandfathers mother was buried with him and his wife in the tomb on the left of Abrahams. Her father and mother were in the tomb on the right. She had not considered if she would have a tomb erected or if she would join her parents in theirs when she passed. She didnt have the time to consider the options and didnt feel it would be necessary as yet.
Integra gazed around the tomb and calculated the thickness of the walls considering secret compartments but did not believe them to contain any. She next went over to the vault in the center of the tomb. It was of standard size and could easily hold the casket as well as journals. Taking the pry bar she had picked up from the shed she proceeded to open the vault and peer inside; nothing but a simple ash casket at the bottom of the vault. She again did a quick calculation and did not see any point in opening the casket. There would be no secret compartments and she highly doubted Abraham would be holding the journals.
With some effort Integra replaced the vault lid and locked the tomb once again. She had truly believed the journals would be there as all the tombs had wards in place to prevent any undead or those under their influence from entering them. It made sense to her to have something that valuable kept in such a place but to her vexation they were not.
On the walk back to the manor Integra wracked her brain trying to figure out where the fabled journals could possibly be. Perhaps Abraham entrusted them to someone, but then who would he have given them to? Integra made a mental note to question the remaining family members of Seward, Holmwood and of course Harker, in that order. There are no Morris heirs as Quincy had been the only one and had died the day her great-grandfather had captured Dracula. Integra felt Seward or Holmwood would have been Abrahams first and second choice. He most likely would not have given them to a Harker opting to leave them in peace after the horrors Mina and Jonathan endured.
As she entered the front door, Sir Hellsing replaced the keys, set down the pry bar and headed back to her office. She needed to make some notes and find the necessary phone numbers for her inquiries in the daytime hours. She was relatively certain none of the other families kept the late hours that she did. She also decided to add Sir Islands, Sir Penwood and Sir Irons to her list. Perhaps she would even consult her Majesty on the matter. Perhaps the journals were locked away in the Tower of London. It was a far reach but still a possibility none the less.
Finishing up her notes and stifling a yawn, Integra headed for her private rooms for some much needed rest. Things would have to wait until daylight for now.
As Integra headed off for bed, Walter found himself asking Alucard to carry Mina back to her rooms as she had fallen fast asleep. Walter suspected this would happen as his goddaughter had been through a lot in the past 2 days. Alucard was almost too happy, for Walters liking, to assist, but then Walter had always suspected Alucard was extremely lonely. Sure he had Seras, but she was technically his daughter and he frequently treated her as such although Walter had hoped she would be more to Alucard in time.
As Walter reflected they reached Minas rooms and Alucard gently placed her on the soft bed. Walter then covered her sleeping form and nearly had to drag Alucard from the room. The ancient vampire was hesitant to leave her side until Walter gently reminded him of Integras orders to stay away from the woman. Reluctantly both men left the woman to sleep in peace.
