Seeing Red
Just before she died, all she saw was red: the red of his coat and hat; the red of his blood on the floor; the red irises of his eyes; the red of the moon and sky outside the church window; and finally the red of her own blood pooling about her. Seras had never really liked the color red, as she always wore a lot of blues and yellow was her favorite color.
As a child her parents always painted her bedroom a light lilac, which Seras assumed was her mothers favorite color. Once her parents had been murdered and she lived in the orphanage the walls had all turned white and color was limited to the blue in her clothing and the dusty brown of the dirt in the walled in yard. No green grass or tree leaves and no brightly colored flowers in hues of yellow, orange, pink and purple. Being an orphanage with very limited funding, there were no crayons or coloring books, no colored paper and at Christmas no brightly wrapped gifts, ornaments, wreaths, bows or trees. For 11 years color was pretty absent from Seras life.
Once she left the orphanage and joined the police academy she didnt have the time to notice the colors of life around her. Her apartment was the way it came tiny and drab. Seras didnt have time to decorate, paint or personalize it. She had never done any of those types of tasks and didnt really miss any of it. She was focused solely on her police training and doing her job.
Shortly after her graduation from the police academy and assignment to the D11 Unit is when Seras Victoria found herself seeing so much red. In that little church in Cheddar she met her death and her Master, the No-Life King, the vampire Alucard, Count Dracula who gave her what he called the gift of unlife. Once a vampire her cell deep in the sublevels of Hellsing Manor was the way it came tiny and grey. She didnt have time to decorate, paint or personalize it either. She was focused on her training and doing her job as an Officer of the Hellsing Organization. Seras never did figure out why Alucard had chosen her to become a vampire and once the War against the crazed Nazis started she never got the chance to ask him before he was gone.
It was near the end of what came to be called the War for London that Seras once again saw so much red. Much of the red she saw that day was blood. So much blood: the blood of her co-workers; the citizens of London; Walter; Pip; Integra; and once again her own. There was also the rotting blood of the Nazis, but more shockingly was the red of the blood that made the Hellsing runes from Alucards gloves. That blood red signal was all that remained of Alucard after nearly 30 years. That and Seras of course. She was his only remaining child after all and perhaps that was why she always felt he would one day return.
Their Master, Sir Integra, refused to believe Seras regarding Alucard ever returning but it was something Seras just KNEW would one day happen. She only hoped for Integras sake that he would before Integra passed away from lung cancer. Seras could smell and sense all those years of cigar smoking had finally caught up with the knight and that it was too late for any treatments to make a difference.
After 30 years of wondering, Seras also intended to ask Alucard once he returned why he had given her an Unlife. The vampire threats to England were few, far between and easily handled by the regular troops now. She certainly wasnt greatly needed, or so she felt. Alucard could have handled everything by himself. The question truly perplexed her and at times angered her that she had to wait to get an answer IF Alucard would even answer her at all. Seras mused it would just be another one of those times she would see red but now she would be thankful and welcome it.
