CHAPTER FIVE
Im not familiar with that name. Who did you say this Alastair is? said Integra.
A demon. Vicious little bastard, too.
And hes now in England?
Yes. I dont know what he plans to do, but I have some idea. Said Sophie.
Which is?
Well, I first heard of him in California. He had been going around killing off heads of anti-vampire organisations up and down the country. Many chapters of both The Knights of Christ and The Western Nocturnal Control Force have suffered heavy losses as a result of Alastair, all around the United States.
Integra was intrigued.
What evidence do you have?
Sophie reached into her pouch and pulled out a CD. May I? she asked, pointing to Integras computer. Integra nodded, and Sophie booted up the disc. She selected a file, and a picture of a satanic symbol appeared on the screen. It was a simple design, which featured a snake coiled inside a Pentagram.
This symbol, Sophie explained, was found burned into the skin of each victim. It didnt take me very long to find out who it belonged to. I have a few Underworld contacts.
So thats the mark of Alastair. Integra said.
I wish I knew more about him. Other than that and the fact he takes human form.
That may be all we need. Integra said, nodding her head reassuringly. Ill have Walter run a thorough search based on the picture evidence.
in the meantime we will have to keep the security tight. You could well be his next target.
Seras played idly with her short blonde hair leaning back on a chair, looking curiously at her master. He proudly polished and inspected his Jackal. She thought ponderously and anxiously as she looked at him. He looked up at her with a look of irritation.
Will you just go and take your insecurity elsewhere, Police Girl? Youre such an irritation.
Eh? she nearly fell off her chair. She forgot he could read her thoughts.
Why on this world are you so bothered with Sophie? Its a distraction.
Well, I was only wondering, Master, Seras began, You helped train Sophie to be a warrior, didnt you?
Yes. She was a disciplined student. She never exasperated me like you do.
She was a good student?
Yes.
Was
was she better than me?
Alucard dropped the gun on the table and fixed Seras with a fiery stare.
I know exactly what youre thinking about, Police Girl, and I know you yearn to ask me a ridiculous and sickeningly irritating question. Since you wont actually ask it, I will answer it for you. Sophie has been a close acquaintance to my Master since before I ever knew of her existence. I am bound to serve Sophie in as much as I am bound to serve everyone my Master loves. Therefore, it is not a question of whether I like Sophie more than you. It is irrelevant. You must keep your place, Police Girl, for I am your master, and you are subordinate to me, for as long as you wish to refuse to free yourself from me.
Seras looked down sheepishly.
But yes, right at this moment, Alucard continued, I would much rather prefer for Sophie to be in this room instead of you. At least she wouldnt infuriate me with her jealousy, like you.
Jealousy? Seras had never considered herself jealous of Sophie. But she realised it at that moment. Sophie was much more gifted, a better fighter, and prettier than her, she thought. She did have a closer and stronger connection with the Hellsing family, and she had known Alucard longer. Seras came to the conclusion that, through duty or through other feelings, Alucard regarded Sophie as more important than Seras.
She was jealous.
Seras turned red as she felt embarrassed, ashamed, and angry all at once. Alucard looked at her with a semi-cruel smirk. Unable to face her master like this, she hurried out of the room.
Walter booted up the computer, and typed a few commands. Soon the screen displayed THE HELLSING DIGITAL ARCHIVE SEARCH ENGINE.
I should be able to find information from our extensive archives on this computer, Sir Integra. He said.
Good. Do it.
The butler typed the word ALASTAIR into the computer and a list of matches came up on the screen in an impressive matter of only a few seconds. He browsed carefully through.
There that one. Said Integra. She had spotted an engraving depicting a snake coiled inside a Pentagram. Walter opened the link, and read text in Latin. When he deciphered and read it, he turned to Integra gravely.
We have a small hitch. He said.
What?
It seems that he is a regenerator. Nothing can kill him. Everything apparently is useless.
Im sure hed find it difficult to regenerate if he took a round from the Harkonnen.
Walter chuckled at the thought. He seems to regenerate at an astonishing rate, according to the text.
So we cant kill him?
It seems not. Said Walter. But, there is a way around it.
We send him back to Hell.
Wont he just return?
No. He only emerges when summoned. And he only returns when he has finished the task he sets out to do, or if the person summoning him is destroyed.
Who could that be?
I guess we have much more detective work ahead.
Sophie has connections. Im sure she can help there.
Integra! Come quickly! it was the cry of Sophie. The news something terrible has happened!
The television news reporter spoke as pictures revealed paramedics removing a body from a cathedral. Father Benedictus was found dead this morning, just before morning mass proceedings. Police suspect a murder, but refuse to comment further.
Father Benedict. Sophie said in disbelief.
He was the father of the Impure Souls Vanquishment group in Hampshire. Said Integra matter-of-factly. I spoke with him last week.
Hes near, said Sophie. We havent much time.
Seras sat forlornly on her coffin-bed. She felt useless, silly, and childish. She thought about Alucards words. Of course she was jealous. Alucard was the only one of her kind that she knew and who understood her, or so she thought. He was her master and guardian. Now she had been tossed aside in favour of the new arrival.
She thought Alucard had been acting like a kid with a crush the moment he saw Sophie. Maybe he didnt realise it. He had been the most animate she had ever seen him before, except when it involved killing.
Hed ridiculed Seras in front of Sophie. Hed acted like he wasnt interested in her anymore. She suddenly felt like she didnt have a friend in the world. She felt inadequate.
Seras rose from her bed, determined. She knew what she would have to do. She was going to prove she was just as worthy as Sophie even more so.
Ill show him. She said through gritted, pointed teeth
