SOPHIE

CHAPTER SIX

Seras had been fairly put-out when Integra sent Sophie along with Alucard on a special assignment. Humph. It really was a great moment to be told that she wasn’t even useful on an interrogation. Sophie was famed for her connections with those that knew the latest happenings, and she knew just where to look. She could have gone on her own, but Alucard had been sent along to provide extra ‘persuasion’ for Underworld types could sometimes be a little tight-lipped. Seras did not know this, and instead she sulked.

Sophie drove the car into a dim street in Whitechapel. Alucard never had learned to operate a motor vehicle – he had trouble with microwaves – for what was the use for a car to an ancient and powerful vampire who could fly? As far as technology went, weapons were his areas of expertise.
They climbed out of the car, and headed down a dark alley littered with rubbish and sleeping tramps. Sophie idly kicked a cardboard box, while Alucard, eyeing the unfortunates on the side, said ‘I feel a little hungry, you know.’

‘Uh, don’t think so, Alucard, I’m sure even vampires can get real sick off blood borne diseases. You don’t know what they’re carrying.’

She stopped at the end of the alley at a wooden door. It was modest and dishevelled. It had a big metal latch, and looked like it was older than the building.

‘Here? You must be joking.’ Said Alucard with slight disgust.

‘I know it’s not your kind of place, Mr. Refined, but just be cool, okay?’

‘No killing. I understand’
‘Not yet, at least.’

She lifted the latch and the door creaked open into an ancient looking inn. It seemed like a place found only in the medieval times. There was an old mantelpiece, the lighting was provided by candles, huge rugged oak beams ran across the low ceiling. Alucard ducked down as he walked inside. The patrons stopped drinking and stared wide eyed at him. The appearance of these customers gave away what this place really was. They were demons and imps and all other kinds of hell-creatures. Men with horns and half-goat half-man creatures all stopped and looked at the vampire with concerned fear. He shot them all a look and they quickly resumed their drinking.

This watering-hole was the haunt (excuse the expression) of those denizens of Hell who were not life-threatening. There are as many in Hell with ‘good’ intentions as there were without. Aside from flashy tempers which lead to violence, they were of no harm and thus were no concern to Hellsing. They sat drinking and socialising, as if they were good townsfolk. Sophie looked around. Many weird and wonderful creatures were there. An imp playfully pinched a waitress’s backside, and chuckled mischievously. She smiled amiably back, and slapped him. With her tail. Two three-foot imps stood on each other’s shoulders to get service at the bar, for tankards of foul smelling ale. It was a bizarre experience that never ceased to amuse Sophie. Alucard was bored with it.
A small troll, about three foot high with rosy cheeks and a friendly grin, scampered up the bar, and pulled out a box. He stood on it to look over the bar.

‘Good evening Lord Alucard, sir,’ he said, faintly nervous. ‘What could I serve you with tonight?’

‘No need, Barnaby. I’m here for some conversation,’ he said, slapping a piece of paper on the counter. Barnaby’s face went sullen.

‘You recognise that?’ said Sophie.

‘Y-yes, I do, Miss… but what dealings could you have with… him?’
‘You know him?’ said Alucard ‘You know something, don’t you, Barnaby.’

‘Um… I…’ he fumbled.

Sophie grabbed him by the jacket and hoisted him over the counter. ‘Tell me who sent for him.’

‘I’m sure, I don’t know a thing about him…’

‘Don’t lie to me, Barnaby,’ Sophie said angrily, ‘Your nose bleeds when you lie.’

‘It’s not bleeding…’

THUMP.

‘It is now.’

Alucard grinned at Sophie.

‘Now tell me who summoned Alastair, or I will have to see about making you even shorter than you are.’ She said.

Alucard found himself with no active part in causing this imp any pain. It was fine, though. He could enjoy watching Sophie do it instead.

‘Okay, okay! I’ll tell you. But he’ll kill me if…’

‘We’ll see to that before he gets to you, Barnaby, my boy.’ Said Alucard.

Barnaby looked relieved. ‘He was here, talking to a vampire. I know that, because I thought to myself, that’s funny, you don’t see may vampires in here these days…’

‘Who was the vampire?’

‘Oh, that rich kid, Razor, he calls himself. Stuck up little boy in my opinion.’

‘Anything else?’ said Alucard.

‘Yes. He handed A-Alastair some thing on a piece of paper. Couldn’t see what it was.’

Sophie dropped Barnaby and the poor imp fell on his rump to the ground. ‘Ouch,’ he said feebly.

‘Thankyou, Barnaby.’ Said Sophie. 'You’ve been most helpful.'

They walked out of the inn. They had not noticed the female vampire hiding herself from them. The female who had also stowed away undetected in the car. The female who had hidden her thoughts so well from her master so not to give herself away, she couldn’t help smiling to herself. She knew what she had to do. She had to find Razor first. She would eliminate him and then she could prove herself worthy of her master’s attention again. She felt in her pocket for the pistol loaded with silver, and after waiting for Alucard and Sophie to be far enough away, Seras walked out of the inn, with a glint of triumph.
