SOPHIE

CHAPTER SEVEN

He looked about twenty five years old, and ruggedly good-looking. He wore an expensive looking suit and walked confidently through the streets of an undesirable part of town. Considering the high frequency of muggings, he was either an extremely brave or extremely stupid man.
Of course, this didn’t really bother a man who could regenerate from any injury he sustained. He’d yet to find a wound severe enough that he couldn’t grow back. Alastair nonchalantly smoked his cigarette, pretending not to notice the attacker come up from behind. He was pulled into an alley by a pale, scruffy and sickly man, and had a knife put to his throat.

‘Wallet, watch, mobile phone – Now.’ He spat at Alastair.

Feigning shock and surprise, he fumbled in his pockets.

‘Oh, I’m sorry, I have nothing.’ He took out a packet of cigarettes, and with an air of unexpected friendliness, offered it up to his attacker. ‘Maybe you would care for a cigarette?’

‘What the f-?’

Alastair grabbed the knife from the mugger, and plunged it deep into his own neck. Blood poured down his suit and soaked into the cloth. The mugger gagged in horror.

‘Now I have your attention…’ Alastair gurgled. He flicked out his arm at a frightening speed. The mugger jerked and stood, frozen, fear and horror having taken over his face. Alastair pulled back his hand, and he held a wet, rubbery item, about the size of a fist. The mugger, aware that it was his heart, uttered a slight murmur and fell to the dirt. Alastair dropped the heart and pulled the knife from his neck. The gaping slit closed up and his flesh appeared completely unharmed. He slung it carelessly to the ground, and it turned into a snake and slithered away.

Seras knew she was a disappointment to her master a lot of the time. She rebuked drinking blood, she was occasionally afraid to battle, she had yet to embrace her powers. She knew this. She knew also, that she could set it all straight in one night. She wanted Alucard to be proud of his little creation, which he saved from human mortality one foul night in Cheddar. She didn’t want to end up an outcast. She was already losing respect from the soldiers in a lot of ways. She didn’t want to lose any respect Alucard may have had for her. She closed the Harkonnen case and lifted it effortlessly despite its considerable weight. She did not want Integra to see her leave the manor. She had been told to stay tonight, at least until Alucard and Sophie returned. Security was on high alert, but Seras knew how to slip out of the base unguarded. She climbed out of the window and dropped onto the ground below. Quickly she darted into the darkness, and soon was off the grounds.

She did not notice the man in the bloodstained suit approaching the gates.

‘Sir Integra,’ said Walter, walking into Integra’s office with a fresh pot of tea, ‘If I may, I would like to talk to you about young Seras.’

Integra looked up from her papers. ‘What about her?’ she said.

‘Well… I don’t think she’s taken too well to the arrival of Miss Sophie, Sir.’

‘Whatever makes you think that?’

‘It’s just that I noticed that she looks a little dejected of late.’

‘Dejected? I thought she was upset from the mall.’ Integra said with some surprise. She wasn’t too good at noticing how people felt these days.

‘I’m sorry, Sir?’

‘Well, she may be a vampire, but she still has the emotions of a young girl. And it has been a long time since she saw so much… carnage. I thought it had, well, disturbed her a little.’

‘Sir Integra,’ said Walter with a little hint of a smile, ‘Do I notice some concern for her there?’

Integra immediately hardened. ‘Not at all.’ She said sternly. ‘I see it purely from a tactical point of view of course. I mean, how can we expect her to perform her duties fully if she still can’t deal with her human feelings?’

‘Of course, Sir. You’re absolutely right.’

‘Bloody right I am.’

‘By the way, no word yet from Alucard and Sophie, but they are on their way to deal with Razor, the vampire who summoned Alastair.’

‘Good.’

‘Sir Integra,’ said Walter uneasily, ‘Pardon me if I’m speaking out of turn here, but do you not think it best if you – ‘

‘Hide away?’ said Integra, cutting him off.

‘That’s not how I was going to put it, Sir. It was a suggestion for your safety.’

‘I’m no coward, Walter.’

‘I know that, Sir. I was taking your personal safety into account.’

‘Alucard will see to that for me, I’m sure, when he rids us of Razor, wouldn’t you agree?’

‘Sir Integra – ‘

He was interrupted by the sounds of splintering wood crashing down onto the floor. Integra and Walter stared at the figure gripping the bodies of two freshly-deceased Hellsing soldiers. He threw them to the floor, and grinned evilly.

‘Well,’ he said viciously, ‘I’m going to enjoy killing you.’

‘Seras!’ Yelled Integra, who immediately wondered why she bothered. She knew that this man, staring at her with evil in his eyes and death on his mind, was indeed, the demon Alastair. She could not defeat him, no matter how much she fought. She could put every bullet from the gun in her desk drawer into him, and he would feel nothing. She could see he had already survived numerous bouts of gunfire on his way through the grounds, for his suit was very well perforated, yet his body appeared unharmed underneath. But she knew, that if this was the moment in which she was going to die, she would face it with dignity. She would not cower to the moment.

Walter, on the other hand, had a different idea. He flicked his wrists outward, and the invisible wires he had concealed at all times flayed through the air. Alastair was completely unprepared. He stood in surprise, and looked at Walter. He raised an eyebrow.
‘Oh,’ he said to himself. He crumbled to the ground like a loaf of sliced bread, segments of his body settling in a heap on the floor

‘Seras!’ yelled Integra once more. Perhaps she’s already dead, she thought to herself.

Walter kicked wildly at the pieces of Alastair, some already melding back together. He scattered the fleshy, bloody pieces as far and wide as he could around the office floor.

‘This should buy some time, Sir Integra. Hurry!’

They ran out of the office, and locked themselves in the armoury. It had a large, strong metal door so they figured it would be more secure.

Alastair, scattered about the office, slithered and writhed as he met up with his various body parts. He had already reformed his upper body, and began walking using his hands to the other parts, assimilating them as he went.

In the armoury, Integra cried out in her head. ‘ALUCARD!’

Razor had seen the girl arrive at the warehouse. He had seen her set up her hugely intimidating weapon outside. He had laughed to himself at how she must have thought it an invisible spot to be in. he had clicked his fingers and vanished, only to reappear right behind the girl.

‘What do you think you are doing?’ he had said to her. She had turned around in shock, only to receive a devastating blow to the head. He was amused to see she was also a vampire.

Now chained to a wall in the warehouse, Seras was helpless and alone. She cursed her ‘brilliant thinking’. She knew her number was up. He was going to stake her as she hung like a hog in a butcher’s window.

‘Little girl,’ he sneered at her, ‘who sent you?’

‘I sent me,’ she said angrily.

‘Come, come. You don’t expect for me to believe that you planned to single-handedly take me out – all by yourself?’

‘Well… yes.’ Seras replied quietly.

‘He’s in there,’ said Sophie, ‘it almost looks too easy.’

‘Let me in there, I’ll turn him into mincemeat,’ said Alucard impatiently.

‘No – wait.’ Said Sophie, peering through binoculars into the warehouse window. ‘He has a hostage… oh, shit, you’re not going to like this.’

‘Why?’

‘It’s Seras.’
