Hellsing Anime Series

Hellsing_1024

This anime is out on DVD. There are four volumes, but the only set worth getting is the four-disc complete set. This was shown on several cable channels and may be re-run again.

The anime consists of 13 episodes. The reason that it's so short is because the studio producing it went bankrupt before completion, so it had to be shortened. This explains the differing storyline to the manga beside the fact that only the first 2 manga were out at the time this anime series was being made. In fact, it was also Hirano-san's decision to separate the anime from the manga.

Episode Guide

Order 01: The Undead

The series opens with Alucard arriving in time to save some rich old geezer from getting more than he bargained for with a female vampire. Just to set the scene. Integra is seen being presented with a sticky situation: A vampire priest is on the loose in Cheddar, and many of the arresting officers have been killed, as well as an elite force D11. She takes pleasure in announcing that she has sent only one man to clean up. She smiles at their surprise. Alucard arrives in Cheddar as Seras Victoria, a D11 officer, flees from her friends who are by now all ghouls. She is held captive by the vampire priest. Alucard's choices are difficult: Let the priest go and he will spare Seras' life, or kill both the vampire and the girl. He takes the middle choice. He shoots Seras, killing the priest. To save Seras he turns her. Integra is pretty pissed off when she finds out.

Order 02: Club M

Seras is recruited into the Hellsing Organization. She settles into her new life as a vampire uneasily. She fails to shoot down a vampire in the process of attacking a woman. Meanwhile a pair of teenage vampires are cutting a swathe of bloody destruction across England. Alucard goes after them with Seras in tow. She finally passes as a Hellsing officer when she shoots down a fleeing vampire. Upon return Alucard tells her that she must start to drink blood or she will become weak. Seras is not so keen on that idea.

Order 03: Sword Dancer

In a university dorm, an Italian student has just killed his gay lover, whilst trying to turn him into a vampire. Anderson arrives in England to collect the body of Enrico Stivaletti, the Italian student (Hellsing kill him, but it's not seen). Autopsy reveals a chip embedded in his neck. Integra orders an investigation through MI5. The boy's body is taken to a morgue to wait return to Italy. However he awakes and goes on a killing spree, looking for his lover. Hellsing arrive on the scene and it's already a blood bath. Anderson barges in and kills Gareth Henderson, a Hellsing operative (first in the series to be killed). He puts a bayonet through Seras's neck (in the manga he totally skewers her) but before he can kill the freak-vampire Stivaletti, Alucard steps in and destroy him instead. Soon a battle ensues between Alucard and Anderson, and we find out the priest is a regenerator, and quite unbeatable. The only thing that stops him is an order from the Archbishop to return to the Vatican, which Integra presents him with not a moment too soon. In the aftermath Alucard offers Seras his blood to drink, but she refuses.

Order 04: Innocent as a Human

Walter discovers a snuff movie on the internet, featuring a Hellsing operative. To protect the identity of the Hellsing Organization, he begins an investigation. Fargason recruits a Captain Steadler to replace Henderson. The new boy harasses Seras. The team is sent to a house in London to take down a vampire, and somehow the whole affair is broadcast on television. They discover a man who calls himself 'Flesh', responsible for the snuff movies. Seras challenges Steadler when he gives away that he knew too much about the incident before the forward unit did. To this end she becomes suspicious and checks out the crime scene later. She discovers hidden cameras all around the place. MI5 agent Harry Anders discovers her snooping around and tells her to bugger off and let him get on with the investigative work. Alucard tell Seras she is on the right track, and she follows Steadler one night off duty, and discovers him meeting with a news reporter. At the same time Alucard interrupts a vampire in the process of killing a human in front of a camera. He kills the vampire and exposes Steadler and Kim, the news reporter. Only Seras' intervention stops him from killing them both. Integra arrives and has Steadler arrested. Her sentence to Kim is altogether more severe: that man's law is not enough to judge her - thus Alucard may do with her what he wishes. He drains her blood in front of Seras, who rushes back to her quarters and gobbles down a bowlful of blood.

Order 05: Brotherhood

An MI5 agent brazenly approaches the Valentine brothers, and ends up in the Thames with a flagpole stuck through him. A round table conference is scheduled to be held to discuss the event. Walter presents Alucard and Seras with new weapons - the 13mm Jackal, a pistol 39cm in length for Alucard, and the 30mm anti-freak Halconnen cannon, almost 2 meters in length for Seras. Alucard is thrilled, Seras isn’t too sure. The Valentine brothers arrange a trap for the Hellsing soldiers, but Seras foils it and no one is hurt. The round table conference begins at Hellsing manor, just a little later the Valentine brothers smash in with an army of ghouls. Integra and the Knights are trapped in the conference room as the Hellsing troops bravely fight. Unfortunately the ghouls eat a lot of them. Integra gets very upset. To be continued...

Order 06: Dead Zone

The Valentine brothers are still attacking the manor. Seras and Walter regroup in the basement, where Alucard is lounging coolly. He won't lend a hand because he's expecting someone.... Walter and Seras make their way to the front of the ghoul attack, and the aged butler surprises everyone by taking out a load of ghouls at once. Seras blows the rest away and then restrains Jan Valentine. Interrogation brings them nothing. Alucard meets Luke Valentine and they battle. Luke reckons he's so much better. He's soon proved WRONG. Jan escapes Walter and Seras while the Hellsing soldiers re-awaken as ghouls and attack. Seras has an episode and tears each one apart with her bare hands. Walter, a little unnerved by it, snaps Seras out of it. Luke Valentine loses the battle with Alucard in a big way, as he gets eaten by Alucard's Hellhound form.

Order 07: Duel

In the aftermath of the Valentine brothers' attack, Integra accepts the blame for the loss of her men, and personally kills all those that were yet to turn into ghouls. She receives a letter from Maxwell, of Section XIII. They meet, and he gloats to her that Hellsing is on the brink of collapse. After a little pep-talk from Alucard, he gets to business. He knows about the freak-chips, because they have appeared in Rome. He does nothing more than taunt her again, while Seras is pursuing a freak through the London underground. The fun is interrupted by the appearance of Anderson. Alucard realizes that it's a trap, and swoops in to save Seras in the nick of time. There is another battle between Anderson and Alucard, who this time loses his head, and appears to be beaten. Not so. He melts, turns into a flock of bats and re-forms. He shoots off Anderson's limbs but fails to put a bullet in his head. Anderson flees. Integra meets with Maxwell again and tells him he's failed.

Order 08: Kill House

A factory in Hong Kong is raided by police and it's discovered that it's where they make the freak chip. Unfortunately it gets destroyed. Times are hard for Hellsing, and they've had to recruit mercenaries and SAS troops. Integra presents the latest information on the freak chip, but says no matter, it doesn't change the goal of the Hellsing Organization - "SEARCH AND DESTROY!" Meanwhile Seras meets Harry Anders again. She agrees to help him, and the pair visit Helena. Anders questions her for information on the freak-chip. She says they are not from England, and please could you just piss off now. Seems that Anders got too close - he is killed when his car blows up. Alucard announces to Integra that he senses another 'true' vampire has arrived for him. Here we see Incognito arriving on the cliffs of Dover.

Order 09: Red Rose Vertigo

Hellsing attempt to raid a castle in Scotland which is believed to house freak vampires. The SAS arrive before they can do anything and they send Hellsing away. When Integra arrives home, Walter announces that her sister, Laura has arrived. Integra appears dazed, and Seras is puzzled. Integra has a conversation with Laura, and she appears weary. That night something mysterious happens to the SAS team at the castle; they end up missing in action. Alucard meets Incognito for the first time, and Seras thinks something's not quite right in the Hellsing manor. When she tries to find Integra, Walter attacks her. Meanwhile Integra falls asleep at her desk, where Laura finds her. Laura undresses Integra and begins to kiss her. "I don't even have a sister," Integra realizes. Laura is in fact a vampire sent to kill Integra. Integra is paralyzed by her spell, the same spell causing Walter to choke Seras. Meanwhile Incognito brags that Alucard doesn't have a master 'any more'. At this point Alucard realizes Integra is in danger and returns to Integra in time to break the spell and kill Laura - but not in time to save Integra. She's been bitten already. Gallantly Integra cuts her own throat to save herself from turning into a vampire.

Order 10: Master of Monster

An emergency operating-theatre is rigged in Integra's office, and Integra is alive, but barely. Doctors work to save her life as Alucard and Seras look on. Alucard calls it Integra's battle. It is at this time that Seras learns Integra is Alucard's master. Integra dreams of her father. We see him teaching her about vampires, and how one day she will take over for him as the head of the Hellsing Organization. We see her father on his deathbed, asking his brother, Richard to look after Integra, and decreeing that her time has come to sit on the throne of Hellsing. Walter, meanwhile, with quiet resolve, strives to continue as normal, making Integra her afternoon tea. He says Integra's battle to stay alive is an inspiration to them all. Integra dreams again, of hiding from her Uncle Richard, who is trying to kill her. He wanted to be head of Hellsing, and only if Integra is dead will that happen. She recalls her fathers advice, to head to the basement in times of danger. She arrives at a dungeon just as Richard finds her. She dives headlong onto the room, where she discovers a tied-up corpse. Richard shoots her and her blood splatters onto the corpse, reviving it. After drinking Integra's spilled blood it goes on to kill Richard's henchmen, and rips off his arm. Integra learns that it is in fact a vampire, named Alucard, bound to serve and protect her. In the real world, Alucard and Integra have a brief telepathic exchange, their closest moments in the series. Alucard displays a fondness for her. But when she awakes from her surgery, the only sign Alucard leaves of his being there, is the sight of the door closing behind him.

Order 11: Transcend Force

In order to trap their enigmatic enemy, Hellsing publicizes a fake ceremony at the Tower of London. Unfortunately they come unstuck, as it turns out that not only are they the missing SAS unit from Order 09, but they are all freak-chip vampires, making them a formidable adversary. The Queen is en route to the Hellsing manor for the real ceremony, meanwhile Seras visits Helena only to find she has been killed by Incognito. Helena only survives long enough to warn Seras that the Hellsing Organization has been played into a trap. A traitor in the Round Table sends the British Army to the Tower, claiming the Hellsing Organization is attacking there. Seras rushes to the scene to stop it. But is she too late?

Order 12: Total Destruction

Seras arrives at the tower to witness Fargason's death at the hands of the Army. Enraged, she straps on the Halconnen cannon and kicks some freak butt. Alucard leaves Integra at the manor to go to the Tower, and battles Incognito. Incognito seems to pummel Alucard.

Order 13: Hellfire

Integra and Walter travel via helicopter to the Tower. They are shot down, and Walter bravely saves her from death as he goes down with the aircraft. Incognito captures Integra and uses her to summon a demon which proceeds to destroy much of London. In the meantime Alucard rises, become more powerful, and battles Incognito in epic style. Eventually, Alucard slays Incognito. Integra is held in prison pending an investigation into who the traitor is. Alucard offers her his blood. Will she? Won't she? Nobody knows!

And nobody will know for sure, for this anime is NOT based directly on the manga, so these plot details will never be addressed.
