THE HELLSING ORGANIZATION

What is The Hellsing Organization?

Hellsing
The Hellsing Organization dates back as far as the days of Professor Abraham Van Helsing, the guy responsible for doing away with Dracula in the Bram Stoker novel. Not a lot is known of the actual details of how he came to operate solely in England, but it is known that the current head of the Organization is Sir Integral Wingates Hellsing. The change from 'Helsing' to 'Hellsing' is probably due to English language.

Anyway.

Vampires exist in the world today. They feed off humans in the night, and hide from the sun through the day. (Not that sunlight can actually kill a vampire, it weakens them considerably.) England has become particularly rife with undead. Only one Organization, secretly supported by the government via the Knights of the Round Table, stands between England and the vampire threat. This is, of course, The Hellsing Organization.

However, there is a new threat on the horizon, an epidemic of 'artificial' vampires is sweeping the nation. A 'freak-chip' implanted into a human gives them the strengths of a vampire and more. Who is behind this? Can they be stopped? We'll see...

Who are they?
Alucard and Integra

Integra Hellsing, the head, may be a young, stormy, strong willed woman, but still she needs some help to beat back the vampires, right? Well, that's why she commands a large army of soldiers in her employ to 'cleanse' vampires and the ghouls they leave behind. But her Organization is so much more than that. One of her closest allies is her butler, a Mr Walter Ddollneaz. He has been the retainer of the Hellsing family since before her father's day, and had fought the Nazi's in WWII. More on that in his Bio. But don't be fooled by his frail and old appearence: they don't call him "Angel of Death" for nothing!
Her biggest weapon against the vampires that threaten to engulf England is, ironically, a vampire. his name is Alucard, and is sworn to protect her. He's not your average vampire, Oh, no. Silver bullets and wooden stakes through the heart don't stop him. His iedntity is mysterious in the Anime. Who is he really?
Alucard, not usually one for heading up recruitment, added to Hellsing's payroll by saving a young police girl, Seras Victoria. Naturally, he had to make her a vampire, but these things happen, right? This sexy young vampire brings some much needed 'fresh blood' to the Hellsing Organization.

So, with all that firepower, the Hellsing Organization should be breezing it's way through the job, right? Wrong.

Lately a mysterious group has been manufacturing 'artificial' vampires at an exponential rate. It's hard to keep up, and Hellsing's resources are being stretched to the limit. What with the untimely interference of Section XIII (more on them soon), the devastating attack from the Valentine Brothers (more on them soon also), Integra Hellsing must battle her way to the heart of the problem, and prevent England from a holocaust. Does she make it? Find out in the anime, or the manga, which each follow separate lines. Stand by for the Hellsing OVA due out any time between now and the second coming of Christ.

The Characters

Integra HellsingSir Integral Hellsing

She is a young, cool, sexy and strict woman, head of the Hellsing Organization. She inherited this legacy following the death of her father, when she was thirteen or so. Right from the start she had troubles: the first person who wanted to kill her was her uncle, because he wanted to take over. These things happen. It was also how she encountered Alucard: in the dungeons of Hellsing manor while fleeing for her life. Alucard was left as a dried up corpse, and re awakened to take out those who threatened Integra. Since that day he has been her loyal servant.
The relationship between the two of them is quite striking. It's master and servant, but it's discussed that they have a deeper feeling for each other. They regularly taunt each other, but when the shit hits the fan, their bond of trust is clear.
Integra is often rather cold, and will get angry more readily than she cries. Her passion for exterminating vampires is great, and she gets very stormy when the Valentine Brothers decide to invade the mansion. To her, vampires are degenerate scum, and are not fit for this world. She is pleased to wipe them out.

AlucardAlucard

A mysterious and enchanting vampire - the product of the Hellsing Organization's research into creating the ultimate undead being, and turning him into a weapon against evil. Alucard is bound to serve the Hellsing family, though he shows more free will than you may imagine. This is apparent when he takes it upon himself to turn Seras Victoria, in order to save her life - sort of.
He hates vampires who do not respect human life - after all, humans are important to vampires for survival. Despite having untold power to kill, he prefers to use guns. Maybe this is because he is forced to use his wits to engage an opponent, maybe it is because his power is reestricted by Integra, and he needs 'clearance' to use it. Alucard enjoys challenges to his strength, and is easily bored with simply taking out ghouls and lesser vampires. To this end he enjoys taunting his prey before pumping them with bullets. But his impressive marksmanship is not all that separates him from the run-of-the-mill vampire - he has incredible regenerative capability, and keeps coming back for more from even the most devastating attcks. Removing his head only pisses him off - he's more likely to turn into a Hellhound and bite your knees off.
In relation to Integra, he is her protecter and servant. But he often likes to remind her of his lethality, and just what a monster he really is. But at times he remains at her side, like a companion. Their relationship is complex to say the least.

Seras Victoria Seras Victoria

Wrong place, wrong time. That's how to sum up her involvment in Hellsing. Held hostage by a vampire priest, this police girl was 'rescued' by Alucard, at the cost of her life. Alucard made a vampire out of her, and had Integra enrol her with the Organization. Perhaps he did this to further his blood line - being one of the few 'genuine' vampires out there, it's understandable. Perhaps he did it for light amusement - to see if she could become like him. Whatever the reason, Seras is a girl struggling to come to terms with her nature. She fears drinking blood for it will make her a monster - but she will become weak.
Alucard is her guide, and without him, she will be lost. She does not want to free herself from his bond. She is his servant vampire, and it thus dependant on him, to survive, to learn. She has something of a crush on him, in my opinion.
There is a huge difference between the manga Seras and her anime version. Her story is told much deeper in the manga. She occasionally "bezerks", first seemingly as a result of her new vampiric nature, but it soon emerges that she had a horrible childhood. It is alluded to in Volume 3 by Walter, who states that Seras is an orphan, yet how her parents die is not revealed until Volume 7, in which we see that they were killed because her father was a policeman who got in too deep. The poor young Seras witnesses the killing of her father, and the killing and post-mortem rape of her own mother. She violently attacks the killers, who shoot her and leave her for dead.
The rest of her childhood was spent in an orphanage, but under close supervision, prone to violent outbursts as a result of her trauma.
Seras shys from blood drinking in the manga, as well as the anime, but becomes considerably stronger, braver and more capable in battle as the manga goes on. Eventually she becomes the True Undead by drinking the blood of Pip, who dies rescuing her from Zorin.

WalterWalter C. Ddollneaz

Loyal butler and retainer to the Hellsing family. And former agent of the Hellsing Organization. Appearences can be deceptive in the case of this mild-mannered old codger, who gracefully goes around the mansion tending to the everyday needs of Alucard, Seras and Integra. But his talents don't stop at folding sheets and making sandwiches, oh, no. He is also a munitions expert, designing and manufacturing weapons such as the Casull, Jackal and Halconnen cannon. But there's more - Alucard refers to him as 'Angel of Death', and for good reason. This guy does things with cheese-wire that you've never seen before. In a pinch he is quick, precise and deadly. Yet he stays calm as a hippie after a pound of hash. He is the personification of the British stiff upper-lip.

Peter FargasonCommander Peter Fargason

Don't go looking for this guy in the manga, he don't exist. Leader of the Hellsing Special Forces, the army that despatches the undead, this guy is tough, unassuming and means business. He gives his life defending the Country, ironically killed by a British army sniper. He initially trains Seras, (in the manga it is essentially all done by Alucard) and despite pushing her to do her best, demotes her to Information Retrieval. Typical British soldier, he too is calm and collected, even when he's under fierce attack from the Valentine brothers.

Pip BernadettePip Bernadette

Well, here's a manga character. Leader of the Wild Geese, a group of mercenaries recruited in by Integra after most of her boys get killed off by the Valentine brothers. Ironially called the 'Britannica Cowboy' by some, he is French, good-looking and totally in love with Seras. He starts out in the Hellsing Organisation with 'I'm in it for the money' attitude, but his loyalty grows exponentially to the end. Eventually his loyalty is toward saving humanity and his love for Seras drives him to rescue her from the deadly Zorin. He dies doing this, but his last words to her are an order to drink his blood. He doesn't go out with a whimper, nor is it swift. He's shot repeatedly and stabbed, and still has time to get a speech and a kiss from Seras.
Look out for the new animated Pip in the forthcoming OVA, due out in Japan December.

Other Characters in Hellsing

HelenaHelena

Feel sorry for poor Helena. All she wants to do is sit at home and read books. Of course, wouldn't you want to do the same if you were an immortal vampire? Helena is a gentle creature who offers no harm to man nor beast. MI5 agent Harry Anders takes Seras to get some information on the freak chips, but walks away empty handed with a flea in his ear. Helena dies at the hands of Incognito. She is an ancient vampire who seems to have transcended bloodlust, and occupies a child-like form. She only appears in the anime.

IncognitoIncognito

Well, what can we say? Incognito, you should be ashamed of yourself!!!
Masochist, lover of women's shoes, nudist and all-round bad-egg. Incognito came about due to the animators being unable to complete the full anime. the Millenium was cast out and Incognito was written in as the 'final big bad guy' for the anime's climax. As a result, of course, he's only in the anime, and God does he look out of place.
Speculations abound that he is controlled by the organisation responsible for the freak-chips. (They were never named in the anime, but one can assume they are the same as in the manga) He appears with what seems to be only one goal - to eliminate the Hellsing Organisation and destroy London. Which he almost does. His weapon of choice is a grenade launcher of some kind which he grows from his own body, the ammuntion supplied from his own... spit? Euuw!
He summons a demon called Sett, which reduces a load of London to ruins, and after a brief struggle with Alucard, ends his days by being impaled on a big-ol' silver spike by Alucard. Haa.

Luke and Jan ValentineLuke and Jan Valentine

Two freak-chip vampire 'brothers' who look nowhere near alike. The former is a girly looking, softly spoken gentleman with a ruthless streak, the latter a foul-mouthed track-suit loving (what we call in British society today a 'chav') murderous young vampire. The pair of them launch a full-scale and devious attack on the Hellsing manor right in the middle of a Round Table conference. While Jan brings his army of ghouls in, taunts the attendees of the conference and gets the wind up Seras and Walter, Luke thinks he's more than a match for Alucard and batlles the ancient vampire. But gets eaten. Jan ultimately gets shot by Integra, but kills himself to avoid interrogation. Tit.
